Running a server

There are different options to consider if you want to run your own Smokin' Guns server. Your choice will depend on the purpose of your server, your computer skills and the amount of money you can/want to spend to run it.

If you want to simply have fun with a couple of friends, you should look at the instructions on running a LAN  server on your computer using the graphical user interface of  Smokin' Guns.

If you want to run a server that is available over the internet, you can rent a dedicated server that has Smokin' Guns pre-installed. Your server provider will take care of all the technical details leaving your with the game configuration and administration via RCON. Unless you have considerable experience with server administration, this choice is highly recommended for a public server.

In case you can not find a server provider for dedicated Smokin' Guns server, you find that option too limiting or you have operating level access to a server anyway, you can install Smokin' Guns on a root server.

A word of advice for those who do not already run their own root server: Taking care of your server, keeping your server and your applications secure requires serious computer skills. Be aware that you are legally responsible for any malicious action that originates from your server - even if someone hacks into your machine or abuses an application on your machine for attacks.
